Sober Companion Support

Sober Companion Support

Sober companion support is a service that connects individuals in recovery from addiction with a trained professional who helps them maintain their goals of sobriety in real-world situations. A sober companion offers emotional support, accountability, and guidance, especially during high-risk situations such as transitioning from rehab to daily life, traveling, or attending high-risk events and functions. Having a sober companion can also bridge the gap between periods of time when one’s loved ones or support system is unavailable to assist or provide accountability.

Types of Sober Companion Support

  1. On-call or Part-time Support: The companion provides support as needed, such as accompanying a client to social events, work, or travel. Bridging the gap when one may be alone for an extended period of time.
  2. Transport Support: Helping individuals safely transition from rehab facilities or detox programs to home, assistance running errands or attending appointments.

Roles of a Sober Companion

  • Preventing relapse by identifying and avoiding triggers
  • Offering transitional emotional and psychological support
  • Assisting with daily routines and structure
  • Encouraging participation in recovery programs and accompanying clients to such events
  • Providing guidance in rebuilding relationships and work-life balance
  • Prompting new behavioral habits one wants to establish such as exercising, self-care, or eating healthy
  • Accountability with drug testing and medication adherence

Who May Benefit From a Sober Companion?

  • Individuals recently out of rehab
  • High-profile clients (actors, musicians, athletes, executives) who need discreet support
  • Those struggling with early sobriety and needing extra accountability
  • People transitioning from intensive treatment to independent living

A sober companion is different from a sponsor or therapist; they provide hands-on, real-time support to ensure one stays on track in their recovery journey. A sober companion is not providing therapeutic services and is not something insurance plans cover or reimburse. This service is designed to primarily provide sober companionship, positive and supportive encouragement, assistance with promoting healthy behaviors and engaging in a recovery orientated routine.
